Pip Ivan or Pip Ivan Chornohirskyi is one of the most colorful peaks of the Chornohora range. Local people also call it «Black Mountain».
According to local legends, Pip Ivan got its name from a cliff, the shape of which looked like a priest. This cliff does not exist today. According to other sources, the mountain’s name originated from a wind singing here (in Ukrainian - «popivaye»). For that reason, local inhabitants, the Hutsuls, called the mountain Pip Ivan.
On the top of the mountain, there are the ruins of the Polish astronomical and meteorological laboratory, partially renovated for tourist purposes, known under the name «White Elephant».
A day-and-night rescue service permanently operates in the observatory building.
Pip Ivan is especially colorful at the beginning of summer, when its slopes are covered with a pink carpet of rhododendron.
