Dovbush Trail is related to the name of Oleksa Dovbush, the leader of Carpathian rebels called opryshky. The opryshky movement is the protest movement against tycoons which existed between 16 and 19 centuries. Peasants escaping from offenders to the mountains usually found a shelter in inaccessible areas and performed brave attacks on rich men. Dovbush was called “Carpathian Robin Hood” because he robbed tycoons and distributed their property among peasants. The trail starts near the Dovbush Rock along the motorway Lviv – Mukachevo in a distance of 2.5 km from Yaremche railway station. The trail is located in the protective area called Dribka and passes through legendary places related to Oleksa Dovbush and the “opryshky” (rebel) movement which existed during years 1738-1745.

In 1990, the project of the installation of sculptural compositions provided performing stone works on the spot. Darius Grabar, the sculptor from Lviv, was involved in the implementation of the project. The composition “Serfdom” reproduces historical background of the emergence of peasantry, the atmosphere of feudal oppression, and mistreatment of peasants. It is expressed in sad faces of the peasants, motifs of tilling the land, and the image of the lord carved on the stone. The central part of the composition is the “Freedom” cross with the date of the abolition of serfdom on the territory of Austria-Hungary.

The next composition describes one of versions of how Dovbush become the opryshok. He was a shepherd, and that is why a man, escaping from flock of sheep, is shown on the left rock. The central rock symbolizes freedom in the form of hands being raised to heaven. The right one shows the opryshky led Oleksa Dovbush. A few meters further there are two more rocks and a crossroad.

  • Canyon of the Prut River

Dovbush Trail is located on the right bank of the Prut River. Here you can visit the unique sandstone rocks with caves which arose 35 million years ago. There is also a beautiful view upon the Prut river canyon. Relict pine, which is present here as well, is very special, because it is the oldest of all species and it is an indicator of pure fresh air.

Caves are the most interesting place of the trail. According to the legend, the trunks with gold of Oleksa Dovbush are hidden there. An entrance to the cave is visible only once a year at night before Ivana Kupala holiday. Unfortunately nobody is able to take treasures since they are fascinated. A person who takes treasure from the cave will turn into a stone as soon as the gold shines in a Moon.
